Exhibition - Song of the Natural World

  • Yorkshire Arboretum Unnamed Road YO60 7BY (map)

This Summer, local Yorkshire artist, Meg Ricketts brings us her exhibition ‘Song of the Natural World.’

Meg lives on the edge of the North York Moors, surrounded by a diverse landscape of ancient woodland, organic farmland, and wild moorland. Her inspiration comes directly from the natural world that surrounds her.

By slowing down and taking time to experience both the visible changes and the hidden details that are found in nature, she likes to record what she sees, to reveal the hidden beauty that surrounds her.

She works from life whenever possible, starting with detailed drawings and watercolours, to get to know her subject. She will then develop them in her studio into acrylic or oil paintings. Often starting with brushes and moving onto using palette knives. She likes the looser effect of the palette knife which creates unexpected colour combinations and marks which mirror the colours and patterns found throughout natural world.

She is particularly interested in looking at revealing the more intimate details such as the whitish/blue bloom found on sloe berries or the pattern and array of colours in lichen, or the detail in the flowers of common ivy.

Ink drawings of birds or wild animals are also a passion of Meg’s, capturing the detail and movement of birds, that are regular visitors in her garden.

Meg believes artists have a unique role in society, to be a visual voice that connects people to a new concept or a new subject in an accessible way. Her work reflects her own experience of the natural world.

For a chance to meet Meg and see her exhibition, do join us at her Preview Evening on Thursday 30th July , 6-8pm with a complimentary glass of wine. Everyone welcome.
