The Fabric of Nature by Caroline Utterson
Caroline is a textile and embroidery artist from York. She works from her studio at South Bank Studios on Bishopthorpe Road.
Inspired by nature and the beautiful Yorkshire landscape, Caroline combines her love of photography, textiles and the natural world.
Each piece is created authentically, utilising her own photographs for reference.
Caroline uses various techniques to depict her subject matter. Adding colour to fabric with paint and appliqué, often including recycled fabrics. Details are ‘drawn’ using freehand machine embroidery. Textures are created using techniques such as punch needle and knitting. Intricate hand embroidery and beading adds the finest details.
Caroline is a regular visitor to the Arboretum. She finds the wealth of nature and the peace and tranquility a real tonic to city centre living. The red squirrels bring much joy and inspiration. She often spends hours observing and photographing them, as well as the many birds who visit.
This exhibition will be a celebration of the beauty and diversity of nature at the Arboretum and the surrounding landscape.
