Preview - 'Botanical' Joint Exhibition in Textiles, Print & Canvas

  • Yorkshire Arboretum (map)

Members and friends are invited to a preview of the the arboretum's summer exhibition - a joint exhibition of textile, print and canvas works on a 'Botanical' theme by renowned local artists Corinne Young, Stef Mitchell and Lesley Seeger.

Meet the artists and enjoy complimentary refreshments.

Corinne Young is a textile artist whose work is inspired by the flowers and insects in her Wolds garden and the artefacts in historic houses. The floral aspect gives her work its colour, texture and form, and the methods and style of the work and its 3D quality comes from the study of historic artefacts such as 17th century stump work caskets. The finished artworks are delicate in feel and reflect the complexity and fragility of their subject matter.

Staithes based Stef Mitchell works directly with nature making monoprints and folded books that create an edge from which the organic accident and intentional mark can be read. The plants tell their own narratives and the reader interacts through viewing, holding and folding. Recent work combines the external language of nature with the internal language of textile design and quilting.

Lesley Seeger paints landscapes both imagined and observed and likes places off the beaten track where nature is strong.  Based only a stone's throw from the Yorkshire Arboretum, a belief in the importance of beauty is a hallmark of her work.  There are many layers to her paintings, which mirror the history and changes of a landscape and the complex strata of our lives.
